Egypt, in the North-West district, was so called because of its connection with the Holmes family. The name is said to have been applied half in derision, because of Joseph Holmes and the vast fields of corn which he raised at his farm in that part of town: "Joseph going into Egypt."

Egypt was located where Grove Street crosses Lake Street. The area later became known as Frenchtown in the late 1890s as many French families immigrated there.
